Why unit prices matter
Bigger packages are usually — but not always — cheaper per unit. Sales on small sizes, “shrinkflation” and multi-buy offers can flip the result. In Canada, many stores show a unit price on the shelf tag, but they don’t always use the same unit (per 100 g vs per kg), which makes comparison hard. This calculator puts everything on the same basis.
Tips
- For multipacks, set Pack to the number of items in the deal (e.g. 6 cans of 355 mL).
- Only buy bulk if you’ll use it before it expires — wasted food erases the saving.
- Compare with tax if one option is taxable and the other isn’t, using the sales tax calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Can I compare grams with pounds?
Yes. Choose each option’s own unit; everything is converted to the same basis.
How do I compare a 12-pack with a 2 L bottle?
Choose Volume, then set Pack to 12 and Size to 355 mL for the cans, and Pack 1, Size 2 L for the bottle.
Is the cheapest per unit always best?
Not if you won’t finish it, or if quality differs. Unit price is one factor.
